Astrology has been practised as a sacred art ever
since the ancients watched the skies and marked the phases of the moon. It has
been a means of knowing the cycles and the tides to guide the understanding of
when to plant, of when to reap and when to wait until the time is ripe for
action, and of gaining insight into what is unfolding in the present.
Astrology is an application of the hermetic principle of 'as
above - so below', whereby the macrocosm of the heavens is reflected in the
microcosm of the earthly world - thus if one can understand the movement of the
heavenly planets and stars, one can gain insight into life as it unfolds on
earth. This is a symbolic relationship based upon correspondances between
heaven and earth and understood through metaphorical perception.
Astrology recognises that all of life is interconnected -
that humanity is participating in the great patterns of life which are
reflected in the movement of the heavenly bodies. This unfolding of life is
traced by the weaving of the planets through the heavens such that astrology
can map the unfolding of the soul and its individual and unique journey through
life.
The recent blending of astrology and psychology, inspired by
the work of Jung, has led to a synthesis of the modern awareness of the psyche
with this ancient understanding of the cosmos and has created a valuable tool
for personal growth and understanding, and for gaining insight into the life's
journey.
Yet because astrology works though symbol and myth it is
also a magical art, and to engage with the inner and outer world guided by
planet and sign is a path which leads to a deeper understanding both of
ourselves and of the mystery of life.
